DYSCALCULIA
DESCRIPTION
Communication Campaign, Exhibition, Motion.
Dyscalculia is an awareness campaign focused on a mental disorder that affects the ability to understand and work with numbers. The project examines how communication design can convey a cognitive experience through visual and sensory language.
The aim was to make the invisible visible to help audiences empathise with what it feels like to live with dyscalculia through design, motion, and interactivity.
Ultimately, Dyscalculia is not only a campaign but a sensory translation of a mental condition, merging data, emotion, and design to foster understanding through experience.
Main concept
The core idea was to interpret dyscalculia through its six defining cognitive codes perception, memory, sequencing, orientation, spatial awareness, and numerical reasoning. Each code was translated into a geometric representation, creating a visual language that communicates the disorder’s complexity.
This became the foundation of the campaign’s identity a mathematical and graphic system that evolves from logic into abstraction, mirroring how dyscalculia disrupts structured reasoning.
Campaign
The project began as an advertising campaign composed of graphic pieces posters, digital visuals, and a website designed to educate and provoke reflection. However, the concept evolved into a more immersive form: an art exhibition where visitors could experience dyscalculia firsthand.
To achieve this, I used Processing, After Effects, and Photoshop to generate abstract visual systems that simulate confusion, repetition, and spatial disorientation sensations commonly experienced by people with dyscalculia. These systems were later integrated into a website and physical exhibition environment.
Exhibition
The project concluded with an exhibition at the CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona). The installation combined digital projections, print pieces, and interactive elements, allowing visitors to experience the sensations of dyscalculia — confusion, distortion, and misalignment — through motion and form.
